The fourth step in the RMS Rainwater Harvesting System is to ensure that your rainwater storage tank overflows. There are a variety of overflow devices that are available to maximize the water quality in your rainwater harvesting system.
The RMS Multisiphon Overflow Device is designed to accept a typical 4” overflow. The RMS Multisiphon provides a skimming effect for the rainwater tank to remove any particulate that enters the rainwater storage tank that is lighter than water. The RMS Multisiphon Overflow Device is also designed to keep odors from entering the tank. The RMS Overflow Device also has a feature that keeps small animals from entering the tank through the overflow pipe. The RMS Multisiphon Overflow Device is designed to be installed on RMS Rainwater Harvesting Systems that are connected to storm drains.
A simple pee trap can be used as an overflow device if the rainwater harvesting storage tank overflows to grade. This pee trap should be sized the same as the inlet to the rainwater storage tank.
A overflow flap can be used on the overflow pipe to keep small animals and reptiles out of your rainwater storage tank. This overflow flap is normally placed outside of your rainwater storage tank and can be easily accessed should it need to be cleaned out. Please contact our professional staff to determine the best overflow option to meet your rainwater harvesting needs at (540) 375-6750 or email info@rainwatermanagement.com.

| Check Valves/Back Flow Preventers | ||
![]() |
A check valve, clack valve, non-return valve or one-way valve is a mechanical device, a valve, which normally allows fluid (liquid or gas) to flow through it in only one direction. Check valves are two-port valves, meaning they have two openings in the body, one for fluid to enter and the other for fluid to leave. There are various types of check valves used in a wide variety of applications. Check valves are often part of common household items. Although they are available in a wide range of sizes and costs, check valves generally are very small, simple, and/or inexpensive. Check valves work automatically and most are not controlled by a person or any external control; accordingly, most do not have any valve handle or stem. The bodies (external shells) of most check valves are made of plastic or metal. Double Check Valve Assemblies are installed at cross-connections to prevent the backflow of rain water into the potable water supply. The assembly consists of two positive seating check modules with captured springs and rubber seat discs. The check module seats and seat discs are replaceable. Service of all internal components can be accomplished through a single access cover secured with stainless steel bolts. The Double Check Valve Assembly is constructed using Lead Free materials. Always check with local authority having jurisdiction regarding vertical orientation, frequency of testing or other installation requirements. |

| Normally Open Pump Float Switch | ||
![]() |
Every step in the RMS Rainwater Harvesting System is thoroughly thought out to make your rainwater harvesting system a high quality system with minimal maintenance. Rainwater pumps are not designed to pump when there is no water in a storage tank and will actually burn up if there is not some type of protection for the pump. The RMS Normally Open Float Switch is provided with all RMS Rainwater Harvesting Systems and installed in the rainwater storage. The switch is wired directly through the pump to provide maximum protection for your rainwater harvesting pump. The float switch is preset on installation to disconnect power from your pump before the rainwater tank completely empties. After the next rain event, the float activates and the pump automatically starts when there is a demand. To find out more about the RMS Normally Open Float and its application to protect your rainwater harvesting pumping system, contact RMS at (540) 375-6750 or email at info@rainwatermanagement.com. | RPZ Backflow | ||
RPZ (Reverse Pressure Zone) water backflow valves/preventers are used to protect water supplies from being contaminated by water flowing back into the fresh water supply. For example, an irrigation system has the potential to allow contaminated water from the lawn to flow back into the pipes that deliver drinking water. RMS uses RPZ backflow valves/preventers to connect domestic back up water and rainwater. When installing a rainwater harvesting system it is necessary for you to check with your locality to determine what type of backflow valves/preventers are required.
|
||
| RMS AIR GAP | ||
When using domestic water as a back up to rainwater, localities require a mechanism to ensure the rainwater does not flow into domestic water system. Normally this can be accomplished by using a double backflow preventer however; some localities require an actual air separation between the two water sources. The RMS Stainless Steel Air Gap is installed on the domestic back up to create this separation. The RMS Air Gap comes in different sizes to meet your domestic line size. The RMS Air Gap is made 100% from stainless steel. For more information on cross connections and back up water systems contact our staff at (540) 375-6750 or email at info@rainwatermanagement.com.
|
||
| RMS Normally Closed Solenoid Valve | ||
The RMS Normally Closed Solenoid Valve is an electromechanical device which allows for an electrical device to control the flow of liquid. The electrical device is activated by a Normally Closed float Switch in the rainwater harvesting tank and causes a current to flow through a coil located on the solenoid valve. This current flow in turn results in a magnetic field which causes the displacement of a metal actuator. The actuator is mechanically linked to a mechanical valve inside the solenoid valve. The RMS Normally closed Solenoid Valve then changes state, or closes to allow a liquid flow through the solenoid valve. A spring is used to return the actuator and valve back to their resting state when the current flow is removed. The RMS Normally Closed Solenoid Valve comes in various sizes to meet your rainwater harvesting needs. For more information please contact RMS at (540) 375-6750 or email at info@rainwatermanagement.com.

||
| Pressure Reducing Valve | ||
![]() |
RMS uses Pressure Reducing Valves in the RMS Rainwater Harvesting System to make the change between rainwater and domestic water automatic without the use of floats or a power source. To find out more about using a Pressure Reducing Valve in your rainwater harvesting system, contact RMS at (540) 375-6750 or email our technical support staff at info@rainwatermanagement.com.
