Rainwater Harvesting System Approved for Boston Police Station

The Massachusetts State Board of Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters recently granted approval for the installation of a rainwater harvesting system at a City of Boston police station now under construction in the neighborhood of Charlestown. The rainwater system was designed by RMS Engineering LLC for the Dorchester-based plumbing and mechanical contractor P. J. Kennedy & Sons. The system includes two vortex filters processing rain from the 9,500 square foot roof and a 10,000 gallon underground storage system on the premises. Two submersible pumps with floating filters deliver water from storage back to the building through a set of cartridge filters and ultraviolet lights for use as flushing water for toilets and urinals. The system provides water use reduction and storm water reduction credits in the LEED™ green building rating system. By harvesting rain from the roof, the system can save upwards of 250,000 gallons of fresh water per year that would be consumed by flushing toilets. The Plumbing Board approval was granted on July 2, 2008 after a plan review of the design and the product data of the components to be supplied to the job by Rainwater Management Solutions of Salem, Virginia. The Boston-based engineering firm R. W. Sullivan developed the initial system specifications.
